A Conversation with Debbie Millman

In Celebration of Her New Book, Love Letter to a Garden

I have been listening to Debbie Millman’s extraordinary podcast, Design Matters, for years — we just celebrated its 20th anniversary with the event-of-a-lifetime at Symphony Space in New York City. And what has always struck me about Design Matters is that it is rich in the thing that makes great podcasts what they are (besides a brilliant host, which Debbie is): a sense of inquiry and curiosity. Why do humans make art? What makes us who we are? Why are our world views what they are? What compels us to want to make a difference in the world?

I am lucky enough to call Debbie a friend, and so I was surprised to learn that she is a dedicated gardener and has been for a long time. A born-and-bred New Yorker, she has planted shady spaces in New York City, where nothing thrived. She planted another garden in New York City that did thrive. She splits her time now between New York and Los Angeles, where she lives with her wife,

, and she has planted a garden there that has really thrived, and she’s included vegetables in the mix, which benefits from the temperate weather and the bright sun.

Last Tuesday, Debbie published her book, Love Letter to a Garden with recipes by Roxane, and I had the opportunity to chat with her the day before it came out. Listen to our conversation about growth, hope, the unknown, beauty, nurturing, and what it means to put down roots.
