Elissa & Katherine talk....publishing
A peek at our conversation about the book-making world, from the sublime to the surprising, to the utterly unbelievable
and I continue our series of no-holds-barred conversations about what it means to live a writing life, with this in-depth chat about our experiences interfacing with the publishing universe.
For those of you who don’t know, Katherine May was a literary scout for some time, and I spent decades as an acquisitions editor for major publishers in the States, editing authors ranging from Dolly Parton (yes, it’s true: she was wonderful) to Mickey Mantle: we have almost 45 years of publishing experience between us. And then we made the leap to the other side of the desk, to devote our lives to our writing work.
We are sharing with you a little snippet of our chat, in which we unpack it all: what it means to be a true publishing partner, what the expectations of authors and publishers are, how we’ve dealt with publishers who have gone MIA (and worse), and the gift of being represented by a great agent who truly supports your work, while also saving you from yourself.
In the paid subscriber post, we include the full, hour-long conversation, the transcript, and podcast file.
