Many of you have reached out to inquire about format, style, level of the workshops I’m leading, so I thought it’d be a good idea to answer those questions (and more) here:
Beginning June 5th, I will be leading a month-long, asynchronous online workshop for the online arm of Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown, 24 Pearl. FAWC has built an online “classroom” that allows for written back and forth, essay/submission posting, direct contact between instructor and student. There will also be an optional Zoom meeting once a week, which I will record and make available for all students who cannot attend. I have had, in the same workshop, students located in Malaysia, London, and Chicago, which is the beauty of the asynchronous model: students log on whenever they are able (my only ask is that they do so once a day). There are still spots available for this workshop, which is suitable for intermediate-advanced level writers who are familiar with the workshopping process: back and forth with other students, critical analysis (critical analysis and kindness are not mutually exclusive, by the way), dedication to the work, the desire to generate new work via exercises.
My workshop at Maine Media College is a five-day residential workshop in (truly gorgeous) Rockport, Maine during arguably the most stunning time of year in this magical place. Because the workshop will take place in person, we will have the opportunity to generate and read your new work in real time, discuss delicate issues of permission and story ownership in a more intimate setting, and come away with a sense of clarity surrounding your narrative voice. Suitable for all levels. (There will likely be lobster rolls, walks/hikes, and various cold plunges involved, but these are optional.)
My workshop at Castle Hill in Truro, Massachusetts on Cape Cod is currently waitlisted, but if you are interested, please contact them and add your name. Also a five-day program, it will focus on the human compulsion to create narrative art from personal experience — we are the story-telling species — and to honor that amidst the voices that say You are not allowed to tell. Suitable for all levels.
All workshops require artistic sensitivity, kindness to each other, the ability to work without aesthetic bias, and kindness to each other. (I said it twice!)
I look forward to seeing you!
