Ah, Maira Kalman - one of my granddaughters favorite books before bed (already years ago)…”Sayonara, Mrs. Kackleman”…and is it kismet that I run to Ella Fitzgerald when I feel like my soul is being co-opted by the insanity around me. I hope you’re healing well, Lissie - you need some delight - and deserve it.
I was thinking how much I was loving this post, and how elegantly you articulate asininity/commodification/beauty - and then to find myself in it! Thank you so much. And do the hall in Hague Blue, it'll look amazing.
Elissa, this is a gem of a post —so full of things on my mattering map: small spaces, color, Maira Kalman, and oh! egg sandwiches. Thank you for adding sparkle to an already beautiful Sunday morning.
It is in the wild and beautiful things that I find healing...and now that I have written this, I realize how this has been a theme going through my life! I'm sure this will end up being a poem and/or artists book sometime soon. Thank you for all of this- I am checking it all out because I always find wonder-full new things in your writings. But thank you most of all for the inspiration!
Thank you for including Living Small and introducing me to your lovely readers. You've convinced me to order India's book, which has been on my to-read list. And now I also think I have to plan a trip to the Shaker Museum. I have always loved Maira's work.
For some reason when I was a kid Uova nel Cestino was often made if one of us kids was sick and also bored with Campbells chicken noodle. My mom called it Toad in the Hole and we all loved it. Still do, as comfort food but I hadn’t thought of adding spinach or ham even though they both routinely are added to my ‘ordinary’ egg sandwich.
Added Wild Things to my cart, thanks for the recommendation. Have you and Susan ever considered relocating to Canada? We could trade you both for [EDIT] I meant Kevin O’Leary, not Dennis. I’m sure Dennis is lovely. Canada doesn’t want Kevin O’Leary back. He’s a Trumpist and a fool.
Please don't feel guilty about sharing your finds, your breadcrumbs are sustenance and a door to beauty when we desperately need them.

Love you Mims
When my daughter was little, we read Maira’s book, Chicken Soup, Boots. We still yell the title whenever I make her chicken soup.

Thank you, India- Your work makes me so happy. 🙏🏻
If India Knight gives her blessing it must pass.

Oh wow, your edition of The Gastronomical Me is gorgeous! Looking forward to talking about it with you :)
Thank you for taking me back to the Chatham Fair, a favorite activity with my friend Ruth's family. We had the Voting Rights Act then.

Denis? He’s a friend of mine. 😬
Kevin! Kevin O’Leary.
Ohhh!! That’s different!
