I have worn socks now for the last couple of weeks. I will not confess to how many pairs of socks I own.

The best socks are handmade wool ones. If I have to wear socks they have to be wool. The handmade ones keep getting stolen around here.

Elissa, thank you for a lovely piece today. Particularly for reminding us of the tragedy of 9/11. The flashback to sitting at my computer and seeing this horrific event in real time is something I still grapple with. Putting it in context is very difficult. On to brighter things, we all seem to share your love of socks. For the longest time, mine were totally without character, and then along came my grandchildren, showering me with all sorts of crazy subjects and patterns. Now Grandad is right up there among the wierdest! And as always, thank you for the recipe. September hugs, John

I also love, love, love September. And recently I have fallen in love with Wellow compression socks. They're not plasticky and they have great colors. I walk a LOT and they are a game changer.

I've heard that about them -- I wear them when I'm doing the rare heavy workout at the gym.

loved this. September is also my favourite month. The Nana Mouskouri was like going back in time and Wyatt Ellis is brilliant. Completely with you on socks and can never have too many minestrone recipes :)

And oh the feeling of that very first time you wear an excellent pair of socks. When one of my sons was about 12 he told me, "I want to be rich when I grow up so that I can wear a brand new pair of socks every day."

Love this! Really got me thinking about the change and all I enjoy about NYC, East coast living. Far from the Big Island , I now call home! Aloha.

I like the idea of gathering together, reminds me my childhood when I spent my summer holidays at my grandparents. It solidifies community, brings the feeling of good neighbourhood.

For vegetarians, the brilliant cheese people at my food coop suggested Piave instead of Parmesan (because of the animal rennet). It’s a very good substitute.

I love Nigel Slater’s writing and his recipes. His books pull me into his London kitchen and I can feel the warm mug of tea in my hand and smell the delicious food he’s creating! I’m also anxiously waiting for his newest— an end-of-September birthday gift to myself. Which will be enjoyed with a mug of tea and fun, wooly socks peeking out between clogs and pant legs.
