I'm reading the 1950 Federal Census, and have been since it was released, unindexed, at 12:01 a.m. , April 1, 2022. Why, you ask? Because I am looking, not for my family, but for the enumeration of this person: Edna Lewis Kingston. Surely you, too, recognize her name.

Or you may not, if you are like so many in the culinary world who "know," her, and revere her, as "Miss Lewis" or "Edna Lewis."

Please make and bake "her" Peach Cobbler from luscious homegrown freestones, soon to be at their seasonal prime, and, with each reverential forkful, contemplate her legacy as you presume to think you know it.

Indeed, I do know her name; I had the pleasure of meeting Miss Lewis several times back in the 80s, and have read The Taste of Country Cooking every year ever since.

So happy you met her. What do you recall about where, when and any conversations you may have had with Edna? My husband and I split our time between upstate NY and Fearrington Village, where Edna guest-cheffed forty years ago. My (and your) dear friend Nathalie D will co-chair a Fearrington event next year. Could you join us?

Nice read, Elissa. So sorry Susan had Melanoma this summer. My son, Andy, 45, had it on his arm, and also had surgery under his arm. He saw Dr. Rolf Freter, at the Greene Cancer Center in Brockton, MA, formerly with Dana Farber in Boston.

If you have Netflix, watch 100 Days With Tata. It’s about a hunky Spanish actor and his deep relationship with his 95 year old grandmother. Wonderful.
