Serendipitously, I have just fallen into an EB White portal myself and am writing a blog inspired by another quote of his. This was such a wonderful and timely read and I thank you! <3
I loved this the first time you posted it, and am so grateful you did so again. I loved re-reading. I ordered a different book of his essays after that original posting, and will order this One Man's Meat collection this time. Thank you for sharing. May we all be contagious with this kind of clarity, heart, and sensibility, and the courage to speak from those.
Elissa, thanks for sharing your thoughts and feelings, and E.B. White's, at this crucial moment in the history of our country. If freedom is to be saved in the U.S., Americans are going to have to make that happen. It's not a time for equivocation or cowardice (this means you, Lisa Murkowski!). This Independence Day we need to rededicate ourselves to doing what we can. My fear is that it may be too late, meaning mostly that too many are not paying attention or just don't seem to care.
One Man's Meat is one of my favorite books. I keep it by my bed so I can dip into it every so often. I love this particular piece...though I am sorry that it has become so relevant.
"One of the earliest truths (and to him most valuable) that the author of Mein Kampf discovered was that it is not the written word, but the spoken word, which in heated moments moves great masses of people to noble or ignoble action." This is one of my favorite White essays. I've read everything of his over the years. He was a mensch.
This was both chilling and sad to read given what the Trump Regime has been up to. EB White is one of my favorite writers. I am going to buy the book and send it to each of my adult children. I have been somewhat appalled at their apathy asking myself, don't they know what is at stake?!
You cannot post this enough and we cannot read it often enough. I just read it over again.

FANTASTIC gift on such a sobering day. Thank you for it.
